Black History Month, an annual nationwide observance that focuses on the history and heritage of African Americans, traces its origins to 1926 with “Negro History Week,” which fell on the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12) and Frederick Douglass (Feb. 14).

This year’s observance comes at a time when some have accused the Trump administration of engaging in efforts to erase or water down the history of slavery and segregation in the United States, or downplay minority history in general.

Others have defended the administration’s efforts, arguing that they are removing left-wing propaganda from publicly supported entities and focusing less on divisive political agendas.
